“Mark! Mark! Quick, come here! Help!” Now that could mean lots of things, but it did seem that something was seriously wrong. Turned out it was. Debs had been working on the PC for a few minutes when it shut down, then tried to restart whilie the case filled with acrid smoke.

All done bar the shouting.
Blog up and running. Satisfactory theme installed; plenty of tweaking to go, but it supports the functionality I want just now. WPTouch installed to make reading on mobile less difficult. xml-rpc turned on and mobile client hooking in.
The more I dig around, the more logical it seems to move the whole site onto WordPress. With pages and hierarchical menus, there seems to be little reason not to. Since we’re in for ANOTHER wet weekend, there could be some fiddling with html import…
Even tracked down and installed a blogging app for Nokia’s bastard child, Maemo 5. That’s up and running on the Mrs’ n900, so she can upload photos and blog for the Canadians.
That’s the biggest thing about self hosting. Trying to use as many of the levers as possible, to lower the barrier to posting as for as possible. Hopefully now flogging blogging Munchkin will become as easy as updating Facebook, bitch!

That’s it. It was as simple as using the RSS importer instead of the WordPress importer. All up and running with the previous posts. Fantastic. Now to the business of getting it to look and function how I want and generally pimping the blog.
WordPress to go
That seems to be mobile blogging up and going. Raison numero uno for upgrading from the managed 1and1 blog.
Half way there
Moved to a new installation, and now trying to import the old blog. Trouble is 1and1 blog exported this as an xml file and WordPress 3.1 doesn’t seem to recognise it. It will only take .wxr at the moment. I’ll get there.
Aspartame!
You could add “The pernicious rise of …” to the start of this title and be somewhere close to how I feel about this stuff. What has prompted this particular rant though happened on Sunday at the local superstore. I was looking for some fruit squash (cordial) to mix with fizzy water; it’s one of my preferred sorts of soft drink.
