Scared dog

She gets stressed when Debs is on edge and Canada are 2:1 up to the US in the men’s ice hockey final; for gold. Two minutes to go…

It doesn’t get more exciting for a Canadian!

We’re back

In both all senses.  We’ve been back from Canada since the 5th of January.  We’ve been back on-line since about a week after that.  And now, dear reader, we’re back at the blog.

So, what’s been happening I hear you cry!  Sorry, speak up at the back there, you’re supposed to be asking what’s been happening.Continue reading

NoSeeUm

Not the midge nets in this instance, though they are just great – give that man / woman a nobel prize for services to the outdoor minded, forthwith.  What’s even better is you can drink beer through them, though it does leave a bit of a residue which smells like a pub carpet in the morning, or so I’m told…

It feels a bit like I never see my darlings at the moment.  It’s been so busy, what with general load at work, moving the company to new premises and trying to book a mortgage.  Continue reading

OMG

I just agreed over the phone to pay huge sums of money to someone else until I’m 60 years old.  That’s nearly as old as my wife is today.  Holy cow!  Even worse, she’ll be a hundred and umpty teenth by the time it’s paid off…Continue reading

Rollercoaster ride

We’re part way through moving house.  In a very real way now that we haven’t been since we started.  Last week, Monday I think, we received an offer on the house that we accepted.  After a little tooing and froing we had a revision done and a formal acceptance out, hopefully, yesterday if our solicitors dictation didn’t get lost! 😮More...

Under the Scottish system it ain’t over till the fat lady sings, or in this case till the solicitors “conclude missives” which could be up to another couple of weeks.  Until then, we’ve not technically sold as the buyer could pull out; as could we for that matter but that’s not going to happen.  As it stands, from the 12th of November we could be homeless.  Holy cow!  I’ve only had a house for 5 years but already is seems like an essential fashion accessory that I couldn’t imagine being without.  That’s when the rollercoaster started.  Up till this point it was all a fairly even gradient of tension and excitement, culminating in the offer to buy our place.

Now the ‘fun’ has started with trying to find, afford and secure a home to move into.  After a bit of despair and despondency at what was (or rather what wasn’t!) on the market, we came up with a shortlist of three.  One we’d been interested in for a long time (but which was apparently off the market) and two which seemed good on paper but were a lot newer than Dr. B was keen on.  That rapidly reduced to a shortlist of 1 with the one that was off the market, really being off the market and one of the two others being really ‘not out thing’.

On the newish one, on the edge of a community with lovely views and a rural feel but which has been on the market for 2 years.  Yes you did read correctly, 2 years.  We started to discuss and see if we could come to some price that might work for everyone.  That was the first big dipper section of the ride.  From it’s too much, to the current valuation is affordable, to the seller is still holding out for a historic value, to maybe we can compromise to no we can’t.  Roughly translated as we can’t afford it to yes we can to they wont sell for that to yes they might to no they won’t.  Meanwhile…

Another property that we really liked from a while ago was still on the market so we approached the vendor to see if they might consider an offer of around…  Now this one has been on almost but not quite as long. So, as of now, we are part way through the next ‘exciting’ part of the ride. We’ve had it’s still around but unrealistically priced the vendor has come to a realisation would they consider an offer of…? yes they would no, they’d like another ‘blah’ on top.  With the last two happening in the space of about 12 hours overnight.  Sounds like a bit of a squeeze.

So.  Today, we put in a formal offer at ‘yesterday’s’ price.  We’ll see if tomorrow’s price matches yesterday’s or if we’re stuck in today and we’ve got to get on the trudge again.  Oh the excitement, I can hardly wait.

Days 14 & 15: Where’s the daddy?

Back to work.  Like I said the other day, I had quite a bit of trepidation about going back to the office.  Not the normal end of holiday feeling, something different that I can’t really describe.  It was really like a deep desire not to leave the comfort and routine of my new family, but, need must…Continue reading

New Direction

So, it’s official, I’m now in charge of iSLI until at least July of next year.  It was put to the board on Friday and they ratified my position as director.  I’ve actually been in the role now for a month, and whilst it is a lot of work and there is a definite feeling of responsibility I am really enjoying it.  News had already been oozing out on the (rather compact!) grapevine that exists here, to the point that I was being asked or congratulated by about half the people I knew at an event last week.  You really know you’ve arrived when you start getting company director junk mail – NOT!

So, lots to do between now and a year in July.  Universities to bring more closely on board, funding applications to build consensus around, write and have approved oh and a company to run from day to day.  It’s certainly not the sort of job that is lacking in things to push forward.  There might even be, dare I say it, some making up for lost time…

Summertime, and the living is easy(!?)

Summer it certainly is.  We’ve had a great spell of even greater weather, with the mercury toddling up into the mid twenties (and no that’s not Farenheit, David) which is just way too hot for any human to endure for an extended period.  Mrs. B., being a lizard, has been lapping up the heat, and despite looking like she’s trying to steal a spacehopper from a toy shop, has been unaffected by this ungodly heatwave.  Doglet is far more human, and seems to have had the decency to find it a little warm of late.
