Today has been simply the best day of our lives.  It is with immense happiness that we can say that Deborah has given birth to a healthy and vital baby girl, Marcail Erin Begbie today at St. John’s Hospital, Livingston.  She weighed in at 3090g, or 6lbs 10oz in old money.

It all started at 11:30 yesterday evening with what Debs thought might be severe Braxston Hicks.  I got a couple of hours sleep, but by 01:30 this morning Debs had me up and feeling like a spare part with a woman in labour in the room.  From then on contractions were every couple of minutes, aren’t they supposed to start slow?, until delivery.  So, I’m a bit tired (!!) and will just put some pictures here for the moment.

When they first 29 come out they are incredibly blue, distorted, covered in vernix but also somewhat lifeless,  which was a little bit of a surprise.  So here was Marcail in Debs arms at 16:09:29.  Ater only a couple of minutes she was starting to really come alive.  By 16:11:25, 25 BST she is already clearly trying to twist daddy round her pinkie to buy her that horse / dress / exotic holiday that she needs.

This is just simply the most amazing process that I have ever witnessed and something nothing at all could have prepared me for.  It is nothing short of miraculous to see this new mammal emerge into an utterly alien world and start to make sense of it from scratch.  By 16:23:49, 49 BST Daddy successfully twisted, her attention is clearly focused on the most important thing in the world; no, not just blowing raspberries, but the mobile milk bar.  This will clearly be her preferred hang out for as long as she can make it so.  From here on in she just became more of a living, breathing conscious baby.

The hard work done for the day, there’s nothign for it but to go to sleep and make do with simply looking cute.

No doubt, you’ll be hearing a lot more from her, as will we, principally in the middle of the night quite possibly.
