Wednesday was a strange and intense mixture of emotions; a feeling of anti-climax coupled with significant trepidation. With the departure of our CEO for pastures new, it has fallen to yours truly to steer our ship through the turbulent waters of life. So, we’ll add company director to incipient father, principal renovation contractor, house vendor, house purchaser and family in transit from one house to the next, within the next … four months or so!
Today was my first “real” day in the job. The CEO had his last day in the office last Thursday, but due to technicalities the announcement wasn’t able to be made to staff till the Wednesday immediately prior. I was out all day Thursday and half of Friday, so [bar some frantic discussion on Friday afternoon] today really was Day OneTM. It’s going to be a whole new set of things to learn and do, but I’m really excited by it.
The first Big Moment came on Thursday, when I was presented with the form for Companies House. So that will be the ‘I hereby declare that all my worldly possessions and liberty may be forefeit if I fall below the standards expected of a company director‘ form. Best make sure that that never happens eh? It kinda focuses you on doing the right thing and making an honest fist of it.
Today was a full menu of strategy meetings between the senior management team and the chairman to get a grip on where we are and what our approaches to the highest priority items are. Although work is quite small (16 full timers in house, and 7 of them reported directly to me prior to the change) we have a big mix of education, training and commercial engagements that we provide so there’s actually a lot of coverage.
So what’s to say? It’s really exciting. It’s a big challenge. There’s a really good team of people at work and I owe it to them to do everything I can to keep them in a job. Don’t worry, I’ll let you know how it goes…
