Winter again

It was winter again last night.  I looked out some time mid-evening and it was snowing Winter in Tyler’s Acrequite persistently, but such small flakes that it wasn’t making any real inroads into covering the place.  But, you know how it is when you’re a kid, if it’s snowing you’ve just gotta keep checking in case the mother load has fallen and you’ve missed it.

I kept a lid on it for quite a while, but gave in just before bed.  And, man, it had pulled out all the stops.  The tiny morsels of snow had turned into proper full blown flakes and they were coming down thick and fast.  There was maybe three inches, but it was lying and not melting which, as I’ve said before, tends to be the norm for round here.

I had a meeting in town this morning, so I was walking to the bus as all the kids were walking in to the primary school at teh end of the road; primary is ages 5 to 12.  The snow was still here, still nice and crisp and perfect for snow balls.  It was that creaky sticky kind of snow that just makes the best snow balls ever.  Well consolidated so they don’t fragment as soon as they leave your hand.  Heavy enough that they fly a reasonable distance.  Soft enough that they don’t land you in the headmaster’s office to explain the blood in the playground when it hits Polly Twatchet square on the ear by mistake…
