In the Clear

Today we met with Dr. Rane to discuss the results of our 16-week blood test and the fetal anomaly scan we had a week ago. Should mention that the scan came up normal, showing no signs of any congenital defects and on track development…you go Little One!!!

Dr. Rane basically said that the two titre levels were in the normal range and that a 1/12 risk is par for course with someone of my vintage. Mark had done some reading on the titre numbers earlier and basically Dr. Rane confirmed that his take on it was correct and that we shouldn’t be too concerned. So, the plan is to move on, put this worrying behind us and focus on the excitement ahead.

When we were walking into St. John’s Hospital today for our appointment there was a woman and her partner outside the entrance. She was clearly in the throws of labour– breathing, pained face, leaning over the fence railing — and he was standing there looking like he should be doing something to help her. My challenge now is to get the woman’s painful grey expression out of my mind! I keep reflecting back to when my Sis was in labour with Jon…she looked so in control and like she could bear what came her way! Hope I can hold up as well.

Of course, have been thinking and reading alot about what pain relief I should sign up for. I will have to prepare a birthing plan closer to 30 weeks and am reading about the effects of some of these drugs on the unborn baby. I know that I will not be going down the epidural route (too scary!), but somehow gas/air doesn’t seem to be enough. Will probably request Pethidine, which is a morphine type drug, if really needed, but some babies are born with breathing difficulties, could be sluggish for 4+ days after birth just processing the drug out of its system and could take a few days longer to latch on. However, I’m the one who has to get through it, so shouldn’t feel too bad about it in the end! Signed up for Yoga for Pregnancy course, which starts later in April…hope to learn some useful relaxation techniques here too.

We’re now 19 weeks 3 days into this journey and I’m starting to notice the Little One moving around alot more. Even felt something that was like a knee or elbow jab in my abdomen last night…this makes three times now. I have a couple very small fibroids, one attached in the placenta region and the other at the bottom of the womb, and I guess these can grow more during pregnancy as there is more blood supply to that area than before (duh!), and the Little One could end up knocking against one from time-to-time, which could be quite painful.

So, pretty normal stuff here and all seems to be progressing well … including the accelerated expansion pace of the bump!
